Bec’s ARC August 2019 Wrap Up

Hi guys!
Can anyone else not quite believe it’s September already?!

I had a great reading month in August making my way through ARCs. Although my original TBR went right out the window, I did beat my goal for the month and found some books I loved!

Here’s what I read last month:

1. Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan
★★★★★ | release date: 5th November 2019 | source: gifted from publisher (Hodder)

A sequel I’ve been waiting for for so long! I read GOPAF during YALC last year so it seemed only fitting for me to read GOSAS around a similar time. Although it was quite different from the first book in terms of theme, being more action and journey based than character based, it definitely progressed the overall story and it turns out that Natasha is still excellent at breaking my heart with her cliffhangers. I’ll be part of the blog tour for this book so keep an eye out for a full review closer to its release!

2. The Beautiful by Reneé Ahdieh
★★★★| release date: 8th October 2019 | source: YALC (Hodder)

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book, but I was really excited for Reneé’s take on vampires. I wasn’t disappointed! I’m intrigued to learn more about Celine and the dark thoughts she’s alluded to having, as well as a more in depth look at the dark underworld of New Orleans that Reneé has created. Definitely a strong start to a new series.

Infinity Son by Adam Silvera: DNF @ 25%

Unfortunately I just couldn’t get on with this book and had to put it down. I haven’t read any of Adam’s work before (apart from What If It’s Us which he wrote with Becky Albertalli) so I’m not sure if it’s a case of I don’t enjoy his style or this book was perhaps written for a younger audience, but it wasn’t for me.

3. Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron
★★★★★ | release date: 3rd September 2019 | source: gifted from publisher (HarperVoyager)

After trying to get hold of an ARC of this every single day at YALC, I was so excited to be sent a copy from HarperVoyager and jumped straight in! Arrah belongs to a family of powerful witch doctors but struggles finding her own magic, however, when the time comes where she needs magic to save her people, she knows she needs to go down darker routes to acquire it. Definitely not your average ‘heroine must get magical powers to save the world’ story, Kingdom of Souls has a unique magic system unlike any I’ve seen before and it is dark. I was so invested in these characters and their journeys and am very excited for this series to continue!

4. Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin
★★★★ | release date: 3rd September 2019 | source: trade

I just want to start off by saying that Lou has my whole heart and I love her. Lou is a runaway witch in a world that persecutes witches, so when she’s forced to marry Reid, a Chasseur (part of the witch hunters guild) she finds herself in just a bit of a sticky situation. This book is a super slow burner, gripping, tense, and it made me laugh out loud so many times. My only gripe is that the ending could’ve wrapped things up just a bit more. However, I still loved it and can’t wait to see where the rest of the series goes.

5. Wilder Girls by Rory Power
★★★★ | release date: 6th February 2020 (UK – out now in the US) | source: trade

Wilder Girls is one of those books where you can just feel the atmosphere seeping through the pages. Hetty, Byatt and Reese are three friends at Raxter School for girls, an island boarding school that’s been under quarantine since being hit by a disease they call the Tox. As more girls in the school begin to die and the strange new growths on their bodies get worse, the trio start to uncover more mysteries on the island. It’s gritty, dark, deals with body horror and definitely made me invested in these girls. I think some of the secrets behind the tox were perhaps slightly predictable, but this didn’t take away from the story.

6. Into the Crooked Place by Alexandra Christo
★★★★ | release date: 8th October 2019 | source: gifted from publisher (Hot Key)

I’ve seen so many comparisons made between this book and Six of Crows, and I’d definitely recommend it for fans of that duology! Tavia, Wesley, Saxony and Karam are four unlikely allies pulled together with a common goal to save their world from a dark magic about to be unleashed upon it. It took me a while to get into this book but once I did, I was very much invested in the story and in Tavia’s character especially. I feel as though this book was just the tip of the iceberg with this series so I can’t wait to see how the story progresses.

My goal was to read 5 ARCs this month, so I’m happy I managed to beat that goal, even if it was just by one book! I’m also really glad that all of my reads this month have been four or five star reads and most are part of a series that I just know I’m going to love continuing.

Did you take part in ARC August? What was your favourite read of the month?

  1. OMG all of these books I’ve been wanting to read and I’m so glad that you had such good things to say about them (except for Infinity Son. I know this is his first time writing a fantasy novel, so I think you’re right about it probably being his writing style). Great job on hitting your goal as well ❤

  2. What a fantastic month! These are some really great books. I’m so happy you enjoyed Kingdom of Souls — I adored it! I’m currently reading Serpent & Dove and I love it so far. Good job on hitting your goal, and great post!
