Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker & Wendy Xu // Mini Review

titFor me, graphic novels is a new genre I’m venturing into. I always feared that the story wouldn’t be able to come across as well with art as it does with novels but I have been proven wrong a lot lately. Although I didn’t love Mooncakes as much as everybody else, I’m still excited that books like this are being brought into the world as graphic novels about queer witches and werewolves definitely wasn’t common when I was younger.

Mooncakes follows the story of Nova Huang, a young witch working at her grandmother’s magical bookshop. In terms of rep, Nova is Chinese-American, hard of hearing (her hearing aids feature heavily in the book which was amazing) and queer. Although sexualities aren’t discussed or labelled in this book, it does feature a F/NB relationship between Nova and childhood sweetheart, Tam. Tam is a non-binary werewolf, also Chinese-American, who comes back to town after a period away. The two soon rekindle their relationship and it is very wholesome.

That being said, the use of colour was beautiful and I loved how rich and vibrant it was. The reason I didn’t rate this book higher was purely because I felt as though the story moved too quickly and because of this, the plot wasn’t fleshed out completely. However, I do appreciate that this is a graphic novel and a fairly short one at that so it does make sense. Luckily, the representation and diverse characters make up for this and it made me excited to pick it up. Nobody’s sexualities or identities are questioned, they are just accepted without fuss which makes the story very wholesome and safe to read.
Overall, this has definitely made me want to pick up even more graphic novels so if you have any recommendations, then please let me know! For now, Mooncakes is available on Netgalley (I believe for auto-acceptance!) so do go over and check it out. The final copy will be released on October 15th!
