The Cantankerous Molly Darling by Alvy Carragher // Blog Tour

Thank you to Chicken House books for sending over a copy in exchange for an honest review.

The back of this book sums the story up in three words –¬†hilarious, family & drama. And I couldn’t agree more. Despite being in a very big reading slump this year, it didn’t take me long to get through this book. We follow Molly Darling, a teenage girl living in rural Ireland. Her mother is eccentric and spends her time in the attic, her sister suddenly announces she is getting married to the local ‘ham sandwich,’ her best friend, Tess is obsessed with being internet famous and Molly is still coming to terms with her father leaving the family home with nothing but a Powerpoint presentation to explain why. Things go from bad to worse when Molly’s dear chickens (all named after literary characters) go missing, ultimately starting a war with the school’s Queen Bee, Claire and her Ugg Boot minions. Wild right? It definitely is.
This story is filled with humour and the rare moment of poignancy. Molly is a very likeable character and her inner monologues are something to be admired. Molly’s mum is both infuriating and extremely cute and the author captures both her and all the secondary characters brilliantly. The setting is atmospheric and despite never visiting Ireland, I feel like I have after reading this book. This book also features a lot of animals, including a three-legged dog and a chicken called Lady Macbeth who lives up to her namesake. Throw in a bit of cute romance, vegan gatherings and teenage angst and you will sum up this book perfectly.
